Subject: Formal protest regarding the Lithuanian government’s decision to close the border with Belarus
Your Excellency,
I am writing to you with the utmost respect but also with deep concern regarding the recent decision of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania to close the border crossings with Belarus starting on Wednesday — a measure that, beyond its official pretexts, represents a clear violation of fundamental human rights, particularly the right to free movement and to maintain family contact.
This decision affects not only Lithuanian and Belarusian citizens but also residents of other European Union member states who have personal, family, or cultural ties with Belarus. Many of them will be forcibly separated and isolated as a result of this arbitrary action.
As a Swedish and European citizen, I feel personally and directly affected by this decision, as the restriction of free movement towards Belarus violates my rights as a citizen of the European Union, undermines my family relations, and ruins previously arranged vacation and personal plans.
This is not merely a misguided policy — it is an unacceptable intrusion into the private and emotional sphere of individuals, driven by political decisions that have nothing to do with public safety or the well-being of citizens.
It is particularly troubling that the justification offered for this measure — the alleged “airborne smuggling” of cigarettes via balloons — lacks any logical or technical credibility. Such reasoning cannot be taken seriously by any security or trade expert, and its repetition in official statements only undermines the rationality and transparency expected from a democratic government.
Even more concerning is the broader pattern that this policy reveals: the use of fear, misinformation, and political pressure as instruments to legitimize actions that contradict the founding principles of the European Union — including respect for human dignity, solidarity, and proportionality.
This border closure does not solve any real problem, but rather punishes innocent people, destroys family and cultural bonds, and promotes a form of ethnic and geopolitical discrimination incompatible with the European spirit of cooperation.
As a European citizen residing in Sweden and a defender of mutual understanding between peoples, I join those calling for the immediate reversal of this decision and the establishment of a humanitarian and rational dialogue between the Lithuanian and Belarusian authorities.
The true threat does not come from balloons or cross-border trade, but from intolerance, information manipulation, and the political instrumentalization of fear.
Closing a border does not stop the wind, but it does block hope, dignity, and the coexistence that Europe so urgently needs to preserve.
With respect and humanist conviction,
Henrik Hernandez
